Sex on the brain book

Despite all that old talk about Mars and Venus, men and women are much more biologically alike than not. But differences in the way our brains are built shed light on everything from the way we flirt to the way we fight to how we raise our boys, says neuropsychiatrist Dr. Louann Brizendine in her provocative new book, The Male Brain. The author talked to TIME about sex, the daddy brain and why some men may be built to cheat. You immediately address the stereotype that guys have one-track, sex-crazed minds. Biologically speaking, is it true?

Wendy Steiner reviews ‘Brain Sex’ by Anne Moir and David Jessel · LRB 25 January

The Sexual Brain is a book about brain mechanisms involved in sexual behavior and feelings, and related topics such as sexual orientation , by the neuroscientist Simon LeVay. The book was praised as a well-written work on science. However, some reviewers pointed out factual errors, and noted that LeVay failed to prove that homosexuality has a biological basis. LeVay writes that his aim is to focus "on the brain mechanisms that are responsible for sexual behavior and feelings"; he discusses sexual orientation among other topics such as the evolutionary basis of sex, sexual development, the organization and development of the brain, the neural mechanisms associated with sexual intercourse , gender differences, and gender identity.

The Male Brain: More Complex Than You Think

In Cordelia Fine's new book Delusions of Gender, she debunks the "neurosexist" myths of evolutionary psychology. In the process, she explores the neuroscience behind why male and female brains might be different - and why they might not. In this excerpt from her book, Fine introduces us to some pernicious myths about the essential differences between male and female brains. My husband would probably like you to know that, for the sake of my research for this chapter, he has had to put up with an awful lot of contemptuous snorting.

In any case, we're talking about it now, and the talk is incessant, mostly fatheaded and ill mannered, and could use some science. That is, if behavior begins in the brain, how do men's and women's brains differ biologically? How do those biological differences affect their behaviors? Am I, a woman, sentenced to be nurturing and passive?
